This is our first post. We are the authors of The Pocket Server. Welcome to our blog. We hope you enjoy this series.

Before we released our book we planned for many contingencies, but a near-complete shutdown of the worldwide restaurant and hospitality industry was not one of them. We are very gratified with the reception The Pocket Server has received, but this is tempered by concern and sadness as we confront the scale of destruction caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In our industry there have been widespread business closures and mass layoffs, and bar, restaurant, hotel and catering workers and their families have faced great hardship and disruption in their lives.

 

Thankfully, this industry is finally beginning to open again and there are hopeful signs that normal commercial activity will resume in the coming months. Vaccines and other interventions are steadily leading to a loosening of commercial restrictions and to increasing public confidence in dining out.

Absence really does make the heart grow fonder, and society’s pent-up demand for our products and services gives good reason to expect that our industry will make a strong recovery. Nevertheless, this is an industry that needs to be rebuilt. Businesses will need to be reopened and new ventures will replace those that have gone away. This process will involve hiring and rehiring of employees and the development of their knowledge and work skills. We hope that The Pocket Server and this blog will aid in that effort.
